Police shooting investigation underway in South Los Angeles

A man was shot by a police officer Thursday near the Harvard Heights neighborhood of South Los Angeles after he pointed a weapon at vehicles, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

The investigation began near St. Andrews Plaza and 18th Street after officers responded to a call about the man with a shotgun.

When the man refused to surrender, the officer fired "multiple 40mmm less lethal rounds," but that didn't stop the man, the LAPD said.

"During the encounter, the suspect raised his weapon at officers, and an officer involved shooting occurred," a statement from the police department said. "The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken into custody."

The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to the hand, the LAPD added.

Police did not say whether the weapon used by the suspect was indeed a shotgun, but the LAPD said its officers will book it as evidence.

No officers or community were injured in the incident.
